One-of-a-kind automatic knife - Winner of the CK&G Knifemakers' Build-Off (Folder category) - Featured at The National Ornamental Metal Museum in the "Modern Art Knives" exhibit this summer
Introduction: In early 2007, CustomKnivesandGuns.com held the first Knifemakers' Build-Off, a competition in which custom knifemakers competed against each other in a set amount of time. There were 2 categories: Fixed blades and folders and I entered each one. This is the folder that I made. After wining the first competition, I moved to the finals which were held at the 2007 Blade Show. Even though there were a lot of really good knives, I was very fortunate to win First Place. Immediately after the knife show, the knife was sent to The National Ornamental Metal Museum in Memphis, TN to be displayed in an exhibit called "Modern Art Knives". The whole making of this knife was documented and we have put together all these photos in a hard cover book that comes with the knife. Please read the description of the knife that is being auctioned as it will give you a better understanding of this piece. See more pictures lower on this page. Description of the knife: This a completely handmade knife which is a full auto. The only fancy material I used was the steel for the blade. I did not want fancy materials to distract from the work I intended to do on this piece. The colors, finish, techniques, execution were all chosen around the Damascus I used. This knife is a modified Scarab with my E-Lock mechanism. The blade is made of Gary House's mosaic Demon Damascus. There are about 4 different steels used in the Damascus and after I hot blued it, it revealed the pattern and 4 different colors. The blade has a compound grind to give the Scarab a little more character. Also a blood groove with vents was machined in the blade and the blade profile was modified by adding a horn on the spine. The blade length of 3 3/4" and the handle length is 4 5/8". The handles are made of titanium which are screwed onto a titanium frame. They were machine sculpted then polished and satin finished to highlight the flutes. The handles and the screws were anodized bronze to accent the colors of the blade. The frame was engine turned on the inside and guilloche moiré style on the bolsters. My logo medallion can be seen on the front while a 1.5mm diamond is set in the back. The pivot was made out of stainless steel Damascus and machined for decoration. I chose to make a stainless steel rocker because it would best compliment the entire look of the piece. This rocker is held in place by 2 handmade titanium screws. The spacer is made of Mike Norris' stainless steel Damascus. It has been hollowed out and pins are visible on the spine.
