Introduction:

In early 2007, CustomKnivesandGuns.com held the first Knifemakers' Build-Off, a competition in which custom knifemakers competed against each other in a set amount of time. There were 2 categories: Fixed blades and folders and I entered each one. This is the fixed blade that I made. After wining the first competition, I moved to the finals which were held at the 2007 Blade Show. Even though there were a lot of really good knives, I was very fortunate to win First Place. Immediately after the knife show, the knife was sent to The National Ornamental Metal Museum in Memphis, TN to be displayed in an exhibit called "Modern Art Knives". The whole making of this knife was documented and we have put together all these photos in a hard cover book that comes with the knife.

Please read the description of the knife that is being auctioned as it will give you a better understanding of this piece. See more pictures lower on this page.

Description of the knife:

The blade is a stainless steel damascus from Mike Norris and it is a pattern I had never used before called Fireclone. The blade measures 7". It is 1.75" at the widest and is .230 thick. There is a double blood groove on both sides which follows the shape of the cutting edge. I re-sanded the grooves after etching to give them more contrast with the rest of the blade. The 2 wedges are satin finished which give the knife a more dynamic appearance. It also goes well with the colors of the handle: the black and silver of the damascus matching the black and white of the micarta. The blade is compound ground; it is a little more difficult than a traditional grind but it helps show off the transition and the changes in the damascus pattern. Finally I machined thumb serrations on the top of the blade.

The handle is constructed of black and white micarta which I have machined and attached like a puzzle. Not only have I used structural adhesive to secure the handle together but I have also made custom screws as fasteners and added internal pins on the tang. There are 19 3/32" stainless steel pins going around 2/3 of the edge of the handle. On this knife I used a half tang and I made it an L shaped design. The L shape made this a more complicated project and the half tang allowed me to lighten and balance the knife. Finally the handle has been sculpted with a palm swell to make it very comfortable in the user hand.

I made the sheath out of leather and Nile crocodile. It is a front open sheath. I picked this design due to the modified Filipino style blade. The inside has been lined with pig skin which is very soft and everything has been hand stitched.
